Aims and objectives of the programme

Aims: This programme has been designed to prepare students to occupy middle - high level administrative positions in organisations to offer support to managers and administrators to ensure the smooth running of the systems in place. Students will be equipped with the appropriate business administrative skills and adequate knowledge in French language to become bilingual business administrators to perform various duties including filing, documents processing, handling correspondence, translation of routine office/ commercial documents etc.

Roles of a Bilingual Business Administrator include the following: Personal Assistants, Secretarial roles, documentation roles, international sales executives, communication executives, frontline executives, brokers and traders with international business, international agents, import and export compliance specialists, hospitality executives etc.

Objectives: This programme seeks to:

  • equip students with general office management and administrative skills

  • equip students with skills to handle the day-to-day tasks of office with the use of basic technology
  • develop students’ presentation skills in French and English

Students’ Admission, Progression and Graduation:

A. Minimum Requirements for Admission
1. Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Candidates.

The general requirements for admission of WASSCE and SSSCE candidates are passes in the three core (3) subjects and three (3) credit passes in the three relevant elective subjects.

i. SSSCE Candidates: Passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English and Mathematics, plus three (3) relevant elective subjects.

ii. WASSCE Candidates: Credit Passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English language and Mathematics, plus three (3) relevant elective subjects.

2. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates Passes (Grade D or better) in three (3) subjects.

Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6 or better) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an Arts subject for (Science students)

3. Admission of Higher National Diploma (HND) Candidates:

Applicant must have graduated with a good HND certificate (i.e. at least 2nd Class Lower Division). In addition, the applicant must have acquired a 2-year post-HND qualification working experience.

Other Diploma qualifications from elsewhere assessed to be equivalent to HND may be similarly considered.

4. Advanced Business Certificate Examination (ABCE) Candidates

Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Also, the applicant must have had credit passes in five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science or Social Studies in the General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE).

5. Mature Students’ Entry

Mature students’ entry avenues to tertiary education provide opportunities for people who could not do so earlier in their lives to further their education at the tertiary level after some years in the workplace (preferably, the formal workplace). Such applicants should normally not exceed

5% (for Public Tertiary Educational Institutions) and 20% (for Private Tertiary Educational Institutions) of the total admissions of an institution in a given academic year.

i. The applicant must be at least 25 years old and show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of birth date obtained not more than 5 years prior to the time of application.

ii Applicant must pass the Mature Students’ Entrance Examinations conducted by the Institute (English Language, Mathematics and an Aptitude Test).

B. Minimum Requirements for Admission to Diploma Programmes
1. Science and Technology Programmes

i. SSCE Candidates: Passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects, English language, Integrated Science and Mathematics, plus two (2) elective subjects.

ii. WASSCE Candidates: Credit Passes (A1-C6) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects, English language, Integrated Science and Mathematics, plus two (2) elective subjects.

2. Arts, Business and Humanities Programmes

i. SSCE Candidates: Passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language and Mathematics, plus two (2) elective subjects.

ii. WASSCE Candidates: Credit Passes (A1-C6) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, plus (2) elective subjects.

C. DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS STUDIES (DBS) CANDIDATES
Four WASSCE credit passes (A1-C6) or four SSCE passes (A-D) including English Language and Mathematics, plus the DBS qualification.

D. PROFESSIONAL AND OTHER ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
All professional certificates and any other qualifications beyond the ones specified above must be referred to the Ghana Tertiary Education commission (GTEC) for the establishment of their equivalences, to determine their suitability to be submitted as supporting documents for admission into tertiary education institutions universities, university colleges, polytechnics, etc.

E. FOREIGN QUALIFICATIONS
All foreign qualifications would be referred to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for determination of equivalences and suitability to be submitted as supporting document for admission.

Students’ Progression
For progression from one semester to another, students must maintain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 1.50.

Students who obtain a CGPA less than 1.50 at the end of a semester shall be put on probation. Students who re-sit two (2) consecutive times while on probation shall be withdrawn from the programme.

A student who fails four or more courses at the end of any semester (except in first semester, first year) shall be put on probation provided the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) obtained is not less than 1.50. However, if the (CGPA) is less than 1.50 he/she shall be withdrawn from the programme.

Students’ Graduation Requirements
The Bachelor of Arts in Bilingual Business Administration is a 4 - year (eight semester) programme minimum. Students who could not graduate after the four years shall be given at least three (3) years extra to complete the programme. To qualify for the award of the degree, candidates shall satisfy the following:

  • Have an accumulated minimum of 120 credit hours,
  • Complete a mandatory supervised and assessed 6 - 8 week internship after the second year in an approved relevant organization/company.
  • Completed project work. This should be an individual or group basis depending on the number of students and supervisors at a time. The project should as much as possible be industry related, properly presented, and supervised.

Employment:
Successful graduates from the programme can gain employment in various sectors such as Governmental and Non-Governmental Organisations; educational institutions; private organisations; sales organisations; healthcare companies including hospitals, pharmaceuticals companies; financial institutions such as banks, loans lending institutions; trade organizations; industries such as factories, manufacturing and production companies; insurance companies; security agencies; distribution firms; transport businesses such as airlines, sea and road transport; Judicial Service; Embassies; Foreign Missions etc.
With re-training and continuing education, many of these graduates rise to top management positions in their workplaces.
